John Robert Martin (1847 - 1943)

John Robert was born to 1874 to William Washington Martin and Francis A Hinton.  He married Ennis Belk in December of 1900 and they had several children together. 1902 - Nimmons Gladies (son) 1904 - Marie (daughter) 1906 - Inez (daughter) 1908 - Hester (daughter) 1909 - Lois (daughter) In 1910, the census shows the family all living together in Kinchafoonee, Marion County Georgia. 1916 - Eula Francis (daughter) was born In 1917, John Robert experienced the death of his wife, Ennis as well as his mother, Francis. It is also documented that at this time the family was living in Columbus. In 1918, John Robert registered for the World War I draft at 44 years old. He was listed as being a cotton mill operator at Perkins Hosiery Mill in Columbus, Georgia and living at 2803 Pierpont Avenue. This is located at the current intersection of Pierpont & Warm Springs Road. In 1930, on the next census, John Robert was listed as head of household and renting a home which housed Francis (15), Lois

Nannie Lois (Martin) Holloway

Nannie Lois Martin Holloway is recorded as Betty's biological mom, only by her living testament told to multiple children and grandchildren. Betty always claimed that Marie raised her and Lois died when she was "young". Lois was born in 1909 to John Robert Martin and Ennis (Belk) Martin.  She had a couple of sisters and at least one brother. Marie, Gladys, Mamie & John Robert. Betty was born in September 1929. She would have been born out of wedlock to Lois and in 1930, Lois is documented as living on Buena Vista Road in Schley County, Georgia with her father John (56), sister Francis (reported as 19, but was 15), her sister Inez (23), Inez's husband, Willis L. Holloway (26) and her nephew Junior (6 months). Lois was not working at this time and was reported as being single. No children belonging to Lois were mentioned. In the 1930 report, Lois and Francis's ages are believed to have been misreported. Lois was reported as being 15 and Francis as 19, but Franci

Betty is by far the biggest mystery in terms of validating information.  She was born September 28, 1929 in Columbus, Georgia and according to her testament when she was alive, told to multiple children and grandchildren - she was born to Nannie Lois Martin and Leon Bagley Holloway. However, Leon and Lois were married in 1931 and in 1930, Lois is listed as living with her father and there is no mention or record of Betty being in the household. The question is - was she there and Betty not reported because she was born out of wedlock? That wouldn't make total sense because also in the home were Inez (Lois's sister) and Inez's husband, Willis L. Holloway, along with their 6 month old son, Junior. However, it may just not have been reported. The 1930 census also reports Lois as being 15 and her sister, Francis, being 19. But after reviewing the DOB for both women, Lois would have been 19 and Francis would have been 14/15 depending on the exact date of the census. Additionall

Digging

Hi There. As an introduction, welcome to the Digging Up Old Bones blog. This blog is dedicated to discovering the family history of my husband, Gregory Simmons. It consists of 4 trees - The Simmons, The Coe's, The Dotson's and the Martin's.   The Simmons Family is largely based in Georgia and Tennessee with roots believed to be from France and Europe. The Simmons Family tree will start with Gregg and move to his father, Sammy Simmons of Jackson, Georgia. The Coe Family is largely based in Georgia and Alabama and will start with Bernice Carol Coe, Gregg's mother. The Dotson's are related by way of Gregg's grandmother, Nancy Dotson Simmons.  The Martin's are related by way of Gregg's grandmother, Betty Ernestine Holloway Coe. There will likely be some Holloway research as well, but in all honesty, we are not positive that she was biologically a Holloway based on family stories, recorded birth dates and census records.  The foundation of research that has b
